Feel like you’ve been running a marathon lately, sponsored by Saturn? You’re not wrong. It’s been rough out there, particularly in the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius), during Aquarius season no less, a little like being between the proverbial rock and hard place.
That’s why this month’s spotlight brings me joy to announce, complete with a full-on Muppet Show drum roll and opening sequence (playing now, in your mind). . . the sun in Pisces!
There are many reasons to love the sun in Pisces, other than the fact that it’s my birthday season, and especially this year. The main one is that its ruler, Jupiter, the “greater benefic,” is also now in Pisces, in its water sign home or domicile.
As a reminder, this hasn’t happened since February-March 2010, the last time Jupiter was in Pisces.
The sun’s move, on February 18th, into Pisces is a fitting thaw to the last two chilly months of MAJOR action in both Saturn-ruled signs, Capricorn and Aquarius, including a Venus retrograde in Capricorn and a Mercury retrograde through both of these signs.
The Saturn-ruled signs build walls and erect limitations, which you are no doubt familiar with by now, living as a human on planet Earth over these last couple of years.
On the other hand, Jupiter unifies, dissolves boundaries, and fosters connection. In Pisces, it’s the great limitless ocean. The sun in Pisces swims in the fortunate waters of Jupiter’s water home, where glasses are always half full and it’s always time for a fairy tale or two or three (Jupiter doesn’t know when to call it a day).
Here’s a random Pisces-themed fairy tale for you:
Fairy Tale Theater
Jupiter represents higher learning, philosophy, law, belief, and, quite literally, the divine, however you think of it. Jupiter is jovial and fruitful, ruling the conception of children and, in the words of the astrologer Vettius Valens from the first century CE, “relief from troubles” (translation: Mark Riley). In Pisces, Jupiter has everything it needs to support these things.
Like its fellow water signs, Pisces leads with its emotions, but, unlike the other two, which can keep their emotions to themselves moodily (Cancer) or strategically (Scorpio), Pisces wears its heart on its sleeve. Pisces suns have a reputation for being naive, tenderhearted, and gullible, and I can say from experience that this not undeserved. As you might guess, life can be harsh at times for those born under the fishes.
Pisces is also one of the four mutable signs (along with Gemini, Virgo, and Sagittarius). Adaptability, flexibility, and reinvention are the name of the game and how these signs move through life. And Pisces might be the biggest shapeshifter of them all, dissolving like the water it is into whatever shape is asked of it, adapting like a chameleon to every wallpaper they encounter.
Luckily for Pisces suns, Jupiter has our backs, at least most of the time. Like our fellow Jupiter-ruled Sagittarius suns, we have a way of rolling merrily along through life, or, rather, floating along, in the case of Pisces.
“It’ll all be fine,” could be our motto. It’s no surprise that Pisces sun Bobby McFerrin penned the song Don’t Worry Be Happy, inspired by the teachings of 20th-century Indian spiritual master Meher Baba, himself a Pisces sun.
Jupiter’s position in the natal chart is key for a Pisces sun. If Jupiter is relatively happy, the Pisces sun will be happy. Look for what sign Jupiter is in, as well as whether Jupiter can “see” the sun in Pisces through a traditional aspect — sextile (60 degrees), square (90 degrees), trine (120 degrees), or opposition (180 degrees). If Jupiter is also in Pisces with the sun, fantastic, and congratulations on both your Jupiter and solar returns!
And, even better, *any* traditional aspect that a Pisces sun makes with Jupiter is helpful to the sun, since Jupiter doesn’t harm, unlike the malefics Mars and Saturn, which are capable of harming through squares, oppositions, and conjunctions.
Pisces sun folks are typically kind souls, and there are numerous artists in our ranks, as an idiosyncratic survey reveals: George Frideric Handel, Victor Hugo, Auguste Renoir, Frédéric Chopin, Albert Einstein, Kurt Weill, Diane Arbus, Frank Gehry, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Fats Domino, John Steinbeck, Nina Simone, Doc Watson, Nat ‘King’ Cole, Jack Kerouac, Gabriel García Márquez, Sidney Poitier, Elizabeth Taylor, Johnny Cash, Alan Rickman, Al Jarreau, Lou Reed, James Taylor, Glenn Close, Liza Minnelli, George Harrison, Billy Crystal, Bobby McFerrin, Luc Besson, Steve Jobs, Isabelle Huppert, Jon Bon Jovi, Daniel Craig, Alexander McQueen, Benicio Del Toro, Kyle MacLachlan, Javier Bardem, Seal, Juliette Binoche, Kurt Cobain, Sean Astin, Rachel Weisz, Queen Latifah, Drew Barrymore, Elliot Page, Rihanna, and Justin Bieber.
Don’t Worry Be Happy
The best news that I have about the sun’s journey through Pisces in the coming month is that the malefic planets basically aren’t involved. Saturn is in Aquarius, in aversion to Pisces next door, out of the picture. Mars, in Capricorn at the start of the sun in Pisces, forms a helpful sextile to Pisces. And then Mars joins Saturn offstage, in Aquarius, out of sight and mind for Pisces.
Even Pluto, scheming away in Capricorn, and Uranus, acting out in Taurus, don’t affect the Pisces parade, which counts dreamy and imaginative Neptune as its bandleader, decked out in Dionysian attire.
Don’t get me wrong — there are still some stark tensions in March, which my forecast next week will get into, namely the fact that Venus will be enclosed by Mars and Saturn all month. And Mars co-present with Saturn (and square Uranus) is no picnic. It’s just that the sun seems to have had enough of the tensions and is either A) hiding its head in the sand, or B) trying to drown out severe events with creative distractions. Or maybe both.
In any event, it feels like the sun in Pisces foreshadows a major thaw in April, once Venus is free of the malefics and enters Pisces, the sign of her exaltation, and Jupiter and Neptune conjoin there.
On March 2nd the sun conjoins the moon in Pisces at 12 degrees for a sweet and inspired new moon conjunct its ruler Jupiter and sextile Uranus. I really love this new moon — it’s relaxed and hopeful, but also energized by Uranian insight. It’s a great moment to start a new chapter in the Pisces house of your chart.
The sun meets up with Jupiter for its exact conjunction on March 5th at 14 degrees Pisces. This is one of the best moments of the year for the sun, and, again, a wonderful time for whatever is going on in the Pisces house of your chart.
On March 13th the sun conjoins with Neptune at 22 degrees Pisces, forming a nice trine with the moon in Cancer. Neptune strikes up the whimsical band for a fun and imaginative romp. This is a great time for creativity of any kind, with fertile Jupiter and imaginative Neptune ready to help.
The sun sextiles the North Node in Taurus and trines the South Node in Scorpio at 24 degrees on March 14th, signaling a supportive nod towards the areas of our lives that will experience change over the next year plus. Get ready: eclipse season starts in April.
The full moon at 27 degrees Virgo on March 17th highlights the escapist disconnect, however, as this cerebral moon opposes the sun, Neptune, Jupiter, and Mercury as well, all seemingly having a party in Pisces.
And finally, on March 18th, the sun sextiles Pluto in Capricorn at 28 degrees, as it prepares to enter Aires, the sign of the sun’s exaltation. This sextile represents a supportive, energizing moment to reflect on all the craziness of the Pluto’s recent dramas — its conjunction with Saturn in the dark pandemic year of 2020, the recent Venus retrograde whistling past Pluto’s graveyards, the currently underway US Pluto return.
To close out our celebration of the sun in Pisces (but read on below for special news, just for my subscribers!), here’s Pisces sun and composer Kurt Weill’s rendition of his beloved Mack the Knife from Threepenny Opera, sung by his wife and muse, Lotte Lenya (Libra sun), and the great Louis Armstrong (Leo sun). Grab you charming, ragtag crew and strike up the band:
